Call for abstracts for europes tidal waves migration and populism jmce and migpop research group workshop 19th june 2018 kings college london

Call for abstracts

In recent elections across the EU, parties adopting an anti-immigration stance and making use of a populist rhetoric have been gaining electoral breakthrough. And yet, the connection between the two remains surprisingly under-researched.

Against this backdrop, this one-day workshop aims to innovatively explore the intertwining between migration and populism, to shed light on whether the rise of the latter is caused by, or merely correlated with, the increase of the former in Europe.

In particular, we welcome papers related but not restricted to the following topics:

  • The interplay between migration and populism;
  • The politicisation and securitisation of migration, including their implications and the reactions to them by different actors;
  • Differences in the framing of migration issues.

Guest speakers include Prof. Leila Simona Talani (Jean Monnet Chair in European Political Economy, King's College London) and Prof. Daphne Halikiopoulou (University of Reading).

This workshop is specifically targeted at young researchers and PhD candidates, and open to both theoretical and empirical approaches, different methodologies and disciplines. Following the event, we plan to disseminate the results of the discussion by working with the authors of selected papers towards a publication.

Please note that there is no registration fee; lunch and a drinks reception will be offered. A partial reimbursement of travel expenses might also be provided, on a competitive basis and depending on budget availability.

To be considered for the conference, please send your abstract (max 300 words) to jmce@kcl.ac.uk by Friday 27th April. Notification of acceptance will be sent in early May, and full papers are expected in early June.
